Double cleansing is typically recommended as a nighttime skincare routine, especially if you wear makeup, sunscreen, or other heavy products during the day. The purpose of double cleansing is to thoroughly remove all makeup, dirt, oil, and impurities from your skin, while also preparing your skin for the rest of your skincare routine.
Here's how to do a double cleanse:
-
Start with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, sunscreen, and excess oil from your skin. Apply the oil-based cleanser to dry skin and massage gently in circular motions for about a minute. Then, rinse it off with warm water.
-
Follow up with a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining impurities and cleanse your skin more deeply. Apply the water-based cleanser to your damp skin and massage it gently for about a minute before rinsing it off with warm water.
Double cleansing can be done every night, or as needed depending on your skin type and lifestyle. For example, if you have oily or acne-prone skin, you may want to double cleanse every night to help prevent breakouts. If you don't wear makeup or heavy products during the day, you may only need to double cleanse on occasion.
I personally don’t do a double cleanse all the time but I do find that on days that I apply more makeup, it’s easier to use a cleansing oil instead of makeup removers before washing my face with a water-based cleanser.
